THE HUMMING
audiovisual scuplture with led holographic fan, 4-min video loop and 2-channel audio
the sculpture "the humming" merges structures and data, focussing on the macro perspective of the flying insects that surround us.
when we discover bees, wasps and hornets up close, our everyday surroundings suddenly seem strange. bizarre symmetry, huge eyes and long antennae surround us and buzz through fields and nature.
exploring the sound of these insects opens up a whole new world and at the same time seems familiar. the audiovisual sculpture uses both natural sound recordings of a bee and bumblebee nest and synthetic interpretations of the buzzing of these animals.
the buzzing is the sound of the hustle and bustle of nature, but also the sound of industrialization and globalization through machines, ships, planes and trucks. both perspectives merge when we are confronted with the current scenario of invasive species such as the asian hornet, which has suddenly arrived in central europe as a human-made effect of globalization and is harming native species.
the sculpture deals with this evolution and merges the appearance of the asian hornet into the other shown insects. suddenly there is trouble in the macro-world of flying insects, and a new predator upsets the balance. the sound sculpture comes to life as it buzzes through the holographic fan and transforms into a hybrid digital insect.
